Backcountry Skiing
With the onset of winter in Alaska comes the desire to put your troubles away, grab your gear, and head outside to have some fun in the snow. Some friends of mine took a break from their classes to ski the fresh powder of Turnagain Pass in the Chugach National Forest. Turnagain Pass is a mountain pass located about an hour drive south of Anchorage along the Seward Highway (can be seen in the sunset picture). The location is very popular for back country skiers, snowshoers, and snowmachiners, and as you can see, beautiful and vast.
The area is closely monitored by the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center, with daily advisories, maps, and information about avalanche safety, which is extremely important for any backcountry winter expedition.
